The gospel is “good news.”  Specifically, the proclamation of all God has accomplished through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  It’s not only the starting point of the Christian faith, but it is the truth that changes everything about everything.  It is our salvation, our hope, and the message of the Church.  Paul wrote about our gospel hope this way:

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.   1 Corinthians 15:1-6 (ESV)

A Summary of the Gospel:

  1. God, who is holy, created man to be in relationship with Him.

  2. Man chose to sin, creating separation and brokenness in our relationship to God. [Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23]

  3. Apart from God, man could do nothing to save himself.

  4. While we were still sinners, Jesus came to save us from our sin. [Romans 5:8; John 3:16]

  5. Jesus died on the cross for our sins and was raised again from the dead. [Romans 10:8-10; Corinthians 15:1-4]

  6. All who believe in Jesus will be saved from sin and have life in His name. This is by grace, not by works. [Romans 10:11-13; Ephesians 2:8-10; Acts 16:31]

  7. Believers now live in relationship with Jesus, which brings transformation. [Romans 12:1-2; Galatians 2:20; 2 Corinthians 5:14-19]

  8. Through the cross and resurrection, Jesus will bring a fully redeemed and restored creation, forever freed from the curse of sin and death where believers will live with Him eternally in glorified bodies. [Isaiah 25:6-9; Romans 8:18-23; Revelation 21:1-5]

The gospel saves the sinner, redeems the shamed, renews the weary, reclaims the lost, rescues the enslaved, and remakes the broken – all by the grace of God in Jesus Christ.  That is good news.  In other words, the gospel is all that God has accomplished for us in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

The gospel changes everything about us.  When we believe the gospel, we are united to the risen Lord, given the Holy Spirit, and connected to other believers as brothers and sisters in Christ
